Caregiving, in my life

For months in 1986 and in 1990, I helped care first for my father and then for my mother in their home while each was dying. I was as present and loving as I could be those times, considering my depth of understanding regarding life and death—also considering where I stood in my evolution as a human being. I know now many gestures and words and practical acts that would have been of comfort to my parents—and, more important, attitudes I could have cultivated that would have eased our relating, for all our sakes. In a section of my just-published book, Caring in Remembered Ways, I've shared what being with my parents and others, since then, who were dying, has fired in me, in the hope this sharing will do some good.
